Principal’s Report – Jess Te Moananui
Term 2, Week 6 - June 2025
Dear Families,
I want to take a moment to acknowledge the incredible effort our teachers have been putting into assessing our students and preparing their reports. Their commitment to every child’s growth is unwavering, and I’m deeply grateful for their professionalism and dedication.
This reporting period, you’ll notice a few changes to our student reports, reflecting recent updates from the Department of Education. As a school committed to continuous improvement, we regularly review our systems and practices through the School Excellence Framework—and I’m proud to share that our approach to reporting has been identified as an area of excellence.
While we’ve worked hard to maintain much of our previous structure, the new format adopts a more holistic view of student development. Reports will still include student voice and goal setting, but they will now also reflect each child’s broader development—including social-emotional, physical, and academic growth. For instance, some students may choose to set goals related to their wellbeing or physical development alongside literacy and numeracy.
Another notable change is in the terminology used in reports. The word ‘sound’ has now been replaced with ‘expected’ to align with updated Department standards. For students with diverse learning needs, you’ll also see a different grading scale in their Individual Education Plan (IEP) reports, replacing the traditional A–E scale.
We’ve included flyers below to further explain these changes, but please don’t hesitate to reach out. My door is always open if you’d like to discuss your child’s report or any other matter.
Uniform Consultation
I’m excited to share that our new school shirt designs are ready for community consultation. This is a great opportunity for everyone to have their say. We know the current shirts have presented challenges—including long manufacturing times, difficulty with stains, and cost concerns. The new designs aim to address these issues while still reflecting our school’s identity. To support a smooth transition, there will be a two-year crossover period during which students can continue wearing the existing shirts.
Celebrating Our Students
A big thank you to all who attended our Recognition Assembly last week. Our dance group gave a fantastic performance of their Riverina Dance routine. While they didn’t progress through the selection this year, we are incredibly proud of their dedication and talent.
Our very first Spelling Bee was held on Wednesday and was a huge success, with 59 enthusiastic students taking part! A big congratulations to our Stage 2 and Stage 3 winners, Clara Saltet and Calais Muller, who will now go on to represent our school at the Riverina Finals. We’re so proud of all our participants – well done to everyone who took part!
Special congratulations also go to Mia Oldfield and Eli Schiemer, who will represent our school at the Cootamundra Public Speaking Round in Week 9. If successful, they’ll compete at the state finals in Term 3—we wish them all the best!
Assessment Updates
Last week, parents of students in Years 2–6 received their child’s PAT (Progressive Achievement Test) results for reading and numeracy. While this is just one measure taken on one day, external assessments provide valuable insights into your child’s progress. We encourage you to review the results and speak with your child’s teacher if you have any questions, celebrations, or concerns.
I also had the pleasure of attending the Temora Principal Network Day last week, where I shared the outstanding progress our students have made in our internal assessments. Their growth is a testament to the hard work of our students, teachers, and support staff, and I couldn’t be prouder.
Thank you for your continued support of our school community.
Kind regards,
Jessica Te Moananui

NSW Public Schools Student Survey
In Term 2, we are offering our students the opportunity to participate in the NSW Public Schools Student Survey. The survey gives students the chance to share their thoughts and feelings about life at school, including questions about their engagement, learning experiences and wellbeing at school.
Hearing directly from our students will help us understand what’s working well and where improvements can be made to our school. The survey is confidential, takes around 10 to 15 minutes to complete, and will be conducted online during school hours.
Participation is voluntary. If you prefer your child not to participate, please complete the opt-out consent form, which will be sent home, and return it to the school.
Further information about the survey is available at

Uniform Consultation Notice
We are initiating a Uniform Consultation process to explore potential updates to our current school shirt.
Why Now?
Several key factors have prompted this review:
- Manufacturing Lead Times: Current suppliers now require at least 4–5 months for production and delivery.
- Material and Design: New Poly/Cotton 180gsm. Advances in materials and uniform technology offer opportunities for greater comfort, durability, and practicality.
- Rising Costs: Evaluate more sustainable and cost-effective options, current shirt $38.95 vs new shirt $30.00
What This Means
We are gathering input to inform any potential changes, with the goal of ensuring uniforms continue to meet the needs of students, staff & families.
If a change is approved:
- A 2-year transition period will be provided to allow ample time for adjustment.
- YNPS (office) will be the exclusive stockist.
- Capped price of $30.00 per shirt for students.
We value your feedback and invite you to participate in this consultation. Your input is essential to making informed, inclusive decisions.

Attendance
Celebrating Strong Attendance at Young North!
This week, we’re proud to celebrate a fantastic achievement—Young North has reached an overall attendance rate of 91%, which is above the state average! Even more exciting, 195 of our students have maintained an attendance rate of above 90%. That’s something to celebrate!
Why does this matter? Because coming to school every day helps students feel connected—to their friends, their classes, and their school community. And when students feel connected, amazing things happen: they’re happier, build stronger friendships, grow in confidence, and perform better academically. That daily presence sets the foundation for greater success in school—and in life.
One of our enthusiastic kindergarten students summed it up perfectly:
“Mum, I really need to go to school every day so that our class wins the pizza party again and I get another certificate for 100% attendance. I want four this year!”
This joyful attitude is exactly what we love to see—students excited to be at school and proud of their efforts.
On the flip side, students who miss school regularly miss out on learning, friendships, and fun. It’s not just about keeping up with schoolwork—regular attendance is one of the biggest factors in a student’s future success. In fact, research shows that students with attendance below 90% are considered educationally at risk.
At Young North, our goal is for every student to achieve 95% attendance or higher. Let’s keep showing up, staying connected, and supporting each other—because every day at school really does count!
